Saturday, June 11th
Very early at 4.30 set of, it is a long way to the tip of the heel of
Italy. It is freezing cold and we are dressed in sweaters and jackets
even it is mid June and we are in the South of Italy!
The sails pull and the engine pushes. We
reach our destination Santa Maria di Leuca at 4 o'clock in the afternoon.
Sunday, June 12th
Promised in our harbour guide the surge is so strong here we hardly
sleep during the night. So we are ready to leave at seven in the morning
- we don't want to pay 46 Euro for another night. We sail with a decent
speed across the Gulf of Taranto. Right in the middle with no land dolphins
jump out of the water right next to us! What a sight! Later in the day
the wind gets stronger and we have to reef the sails. I am bit worried
to take down the sails when the wind is that strong but we manage without
problems. The new Marina in Ciro Marina is part of the touristic development
of Calabria. At first sight it looks perfect, berthing places with water
and electricity. But they are all occupied by fisher boats, water and
electricity doesn't function, toilets and showers are non existent.
The advantage is when you find a space you don't need to pay because
there is also no management.
