One has to get used to the driving in Sicily - the traffic is very dense close to the city, parking to the right and left from the road is normal and low hanging balconies in addition to narrow roads. Specially with our not to low vehicle driving is not so easy. I wish I would have the nerves to take pictures of these situations...

South of Messina it is getting better - or we are getting used to. Soon we have the first view to Mount Etna - gigantic!

Taormina we explore by bus, much better for our nerves. The city is full of cars and tourists and tourist kitsch!

"Gola d'Alcantara", a canyon of bizar shaped basalt walls is more to our liking.

At the lower slopes of Mt. Etna we find a very nice location to camp. The appletrees are in full blossom.

We come closer to this gigantic mountain. And more often the land next to the road is covered with black lave stone. The road climbs higher and higher up to 1910 meters. From here you have to go by fourwheel jeeps. Unfortunately it is still to much snow. Perhaps we will come back on our way back.

Catania is the second largest high density area of Sicily. During the centuries it has been flattened several times and built up again! Der black lava stone is omnipresent, even the emblem of the city - a small elefant from roman times is created of lava .
